In fact, while new costume jewelry will literally depreciate in value, signed vintage jewelry from the 1920’s through the late 1960’s and early 70’s is still appreciating in value. In today’s vintage jewelry market, there are many unscrupulous jewelry dealers hoping to make a quick buck off of an unsuspecting collector by selling them a fake piece of jewelry at authentic prices. And with the high-quality fake materials being used to mass produce these fake pieces that are being found on the market today, it can be very hard to tell which pieces are real and which ones are frauds.

A piece of jewelry can be rare but command little demand and thus be relatively worthless. The market can be fickle so while some vintage designs are valuable in all market conditions, some are only hot for a moment and then relatively worthless. Profits tend to be highest for investors when they do their homework and avoid purchasing pieces they like as opposed to the ones they know to be profitable.
A person does not have to be a celebrity to appreciate vintage costume jewelry. Their uniqueness, aesthetic value and superb craftsmanship make them popular collectible items, and with proper care, they can be a good investment, too, since serious collectors will pay top dollar for vintage costume jewelry that is in mint condition. But more than that, the experience of owning and wearing a thing of beauty that comes from a bygone era is simply priceless.
